Retromobile – 2019 edition – is always a milestone on its own. A remarkable rendez-vous between dreamers and custodians making classic automobile still alive. Unsurprisingly, when the automotive field moves towards AI and autonomous drive, that is in all likelihood the future, we tend to explore the past. The origins, either it be accessible or not. Fiskens, Peter Auto, Lukas Huni AG and Richard Mille bring the most exclusive and expensive art pieces. This last owns a large collection of genuine F1: Niki Lauda’s 1984 Mclaren MP4/2, Ayrton Senna’s 1988 MP4/4, Team founder Bruce McLaren’s 1969 Double Wing M7C and 1970 M14A (cover picture), Button and Hamilton’s 2011 MP4-26. Quite a CV. Next to those Retromobile 2019 gems sit few others formulas like a Porsche engined 1991 Footwork FA12. Even Renault came to its big stand with a 1977 GP winning RS10.

The Festival Automobile International 2019 is once more a high-end vintage. Displaying the 504 coupé-inspired Peugeot E-Legend, that in my opinion is more looking like a frowning 505, let’s be honest. The €6M Bugatti Divo ultimate car designed for corners, taking its name from the 1928 & 1929 Targa Florio winner. The Formula E Gen2 looks like being straight out of a Batman movie universe. Pretty original, an asymmetrical DS X E-tense having two uses: do drive or be driven. Renault presents the autonomous EZ Ultimo. A vision of the car to be a home’s extension/copy-paste. Note the losange exterior body layout being Renault badge nod. More contemporary, the Mercedes Maybach Ultimate Luxury Vision: says it all. Finally, two very exclusive Ferraris: the SP38 inspired by the 308 GTB and F40 and a 812-based Ferrari Monza SP1.

The Festival Automobile International 2017 came as a pretty special edition. Porsche bringing two endurance winner cars. The first is the very 917 K chassis (1 of 3) that won the 1970’s 24 hours of Le Mans and driven by Hans Herrmann & Richard Attwood. That year, only 16 of 51 cars did cross the finish line. A fourth one was not accepted: the drivers to be Steve McQueen and Jackie Stewart. It would have been a thrilling onboard basis for the movie « Le Mans ». The second car is a 919 Hybrid driven motorised by a tiny V4 2,0 L and an electric power unit (500 + 400 bhp). Amazing to see that in its original « 24 hours-enduring » state, full of dirtiness, scratchs and oil.

Also displayed an original 1958 Maserati Eldorado, known to be the first sponsorized monoplace (Eldorado being an ice cream company). Alfa Tipo B, Renault Trezor, Formula E, Avion Voisins C28 Aerosport.

Grand-Prix de l’Age d’Or 2014 is the latest edition of the oldest historic car meeting in France. Created by Serge Pozzoli under the name of Coupes de l’Age d’Or before between 1964 and 1980. (This true car enthousiast and collector deserves an entire article for his own). This event has been held at three high-pedigree tracks for 50 years. First on the Rouen-les-Essarts circuit as support for the French F1 GP (Grand-Prix de l’Automobile Club de France). Then moved to the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry, before losing its homologation in 2004. Nowadays, organized on Burgundy’s short circuit (3.8 km) of Dijon-Prenois; being the theater of the battle between René Arnoux and Gilles Villeneuve at 1979 French GP.

Peter Auto comes back this year as the meeting organizer, attempting in the late 1980’s. But through years of international experience, this promoter gives it a new impetus. Let’s recall that it also organize events like the Tour Auto, Le Mans Classic, Spa Classic… No surprise Grand-Prix de l’Age d’Or 2014 attracts the owners and drivers of 300 from the world best racing cars. Spectators are welcomed to stroll around the paddock with temporary garages. A very authentic way to get plenty for your eyes and ears.

Le Mans Story, 2013 edition, takes place in mid summer. Consider this as the yearly alternative of Peter Autos’ Le Mans Classic event. Back to the past, you can revive the vintage atmosphere there too. Except that the drivers don’t focus on being competitive but come for a more casual trackday-like week-end. No celebrities either. They are also limited to the permanent variation track, that is Le Bugatti.

Don’t think this event to be insignificant though. Even if the affluence is far from the famous round-the-clock event, it brings more than 8000 spectators. Each actual category gathers appealing rarities. Either it be seventies GTs and prototypes, to be compared to the LMP1/2, Lotus, Formula 3 Classics, Formula Ford, Group 2 Tourism… Some lucky folks to parade before each session with their club.

Next year, after Le Mans Story 2013 closes its doors, the next edition will be celebrating an icon and a success. The 50th anniversary of Caroll Shelby’s AC Cobra Daytona 24 hours of Le Mans GT 3.0L win. Dan Gurney behind the steering wheel, who got an overall win in 1967 with another american glory: Ford GT40.
